The history of Aquincum
Ep. 04

The history of Aquincum

Episode description

Aquincum is a part of the 3rd district of Budapest, named after the Roman settlement of the same name that once stood here. Most of the area is occupied by Roman archaeological remains belonging to the Aquincum Museum. Aquincum was originally a Roman military camp and civilian settlement in the area of present-day Budapest. Its origins date back to the time when the Romans occupied significant areas in the second half of the first century. The written history of the Budapest area also begins with the Roman garrison of Aquincum, founded around 89 AD on the right side of the Danube near a Celtic settlement. The historic Roman ruins are the setting for this episode of Danube Streamwaves Soundmap, produced by Civil Radio Budapest.
